Unboxing and First Impressions
The Sage Barista Express arrives in an imposing box. The stainless-steel machine weighs 12.4 kg and exudes solidity. Polished design, analogue dials, a heavy metal portafilter: you immediately sense the build quality.
The package includes the portafilter, 4 filter baskets (single, double, and pressurised single and double for beginners), a tamper, a milk jug, and a cleaning kit.
Integrated Conical Grinder
The conical grinder offers 18 grind settings, from near-Turkish to coarse. That's a major advantage: no need to buy a separate grinder (a saving of 150-300€). The grind is even and consistent, though purists will note that a dedicated high-end grinder will do slightly better.
You set the dose (between 18 and 22 g for a double shot) using a rotary dial on the side. Simple and effective.
Extraction: The Heart of the Matter
This is where the Barista Express stands apart from automatic machines: you control everything. Coffee dose, tamping, extraction time. The built-in pressure gauge shows whether your extraction is in the optimal zone (the shaded "Espresso Range").
In the first few days, you often pull under-extracted shots (too sour) or over-extracted ones (too bitter). But by adjusting the grind and the dose, you quickly find your sweet spot. After two weeks of testing, our espressos rivalled those of good Parisian cafés.
The Steam Wand: Latte Art at Home
The standout feature that justifies the price. The Barista Express's steam wand produces a dense, velvety microfoam, perfect for latte art. The 1850 W heating power lets it reach steam pressure quickly.
We managed hearts and rosettas by the second week. For latte-art enthusiasts, it's the most accessible machine on the market. Automatic machines, even at 1,200€, don't allow this level of control over milk texture.
Maintenance
The Barista Express requires more maintenance than an automatic machine:
- After each coffee: rinse the portafilter, purge the wand
- Each week: backflush with a cleaning tablet
- Each month: clean the grinder
- Every 2-3 months: descaling
That's the price of freedom. If this upkeep puts you off, an automatic machine will suit you better.
