Philips 5500 LatteGo Review — Our 2026 Verdict

Overall rating: 8.5/10 — The most complete family machine in the €500-600 segment

The Philips 5500 Series LatteGo (EP5547/90) takes the recipe that made the 3200 and 5400 series successful up a notch: 20 drinks including iced recipes, quieter operation (SilentBrew), and still the LatteGo, the simplest milk system to clean on the market. It can be found around €560-580. For this review, we analyzed Philips' official spec sheet, cross-checked specialist press tests and user feedback, and compared its performance against the machines we test hands-on.

20 drinks, including iced

The Philips 5500 is the most versatile machine in its price range. The menu counts 20 one-touch recipes: espresso, ristretto, coffee, americano, cappuccino, latte macchiato, flat white, café crème — and a series of iced drinks (iced coffee, iced latte) extracted at reduced temperature so they aren't diluted over ice. In 2026, that's still rare at this price: the De'Longhi Rivelia offers some too, but the Magnifica Evo Next sticks to hot recipes.

Every drink is customizable (strength, volume, temperature, milk quantity) and can be saved in 4 user profiles — everyone finds their morning settings without reprogramming.

LatteGo: still the maintenance benchmark

The LatteGo system remains unmatched for practicality: two parts, zero tubes. The carafe clips on, froths milk in seconds, then rinses under the tap in 15 seconds or goes in the dishwasher. After years of scrubbing milk tubes on suction systems, it's a decisive daily convenience when cappuccinos come back to back.

The limit: the carafe only holds 0.26 L — enough for two cappuccinos, not four. For a crowd, you'll need to refill it.

SilentBrew and QuickStart: everyday comfort

Philips claims extraction is 40% quieter thanks to SilentBrew (a better-insulated ceramic grinder and pump). With no decibel-meter measurement published by the manufacturer, we can't put a number on the gap — but specialist press tests converge: it's one of the most discreet bean-to-cup machines around, a real argument for early risers.

QuickStart removes the wait at power-on: the first cup starts immediately, without the warm-up rinse that slows down competing machines.

Ceramic grinder and maintenance

The 100% ceramic grinder (12 settings) is a historic Philips choice: it doesn't heat the beans and wears more slowly than steel. The grind is homogeneous and consistent, with a slight edge in perceived fineness at intermediate settings according to user feedback — less fine at the extreme than De'Longhi's 13 settings.

On maintenance, the AquaClean filter changes the game: replaced at the machine's alerts, it allows up to 5,000 cups without descaling. Just budget for replacement filters (a few euros per month of use).

Weak points to know

  • 0.26 L carafe: tight for more than two milk drinks in a row
  • Plastic finish: decent, but without the nobility of Jura machines, or of the Rivelia and its immersive screen
  • High launch price: the price fluctuates heavily — promotions are frequent, don't pay full price

Who is the Philips 5500 LatteGo for?

Buy it if:

  • Several of you at home have different tastes (4 profiles)
  • You drink as many milk drinks as espressos
  • Fast milk-system cleaning is an absolute priority
  • You want iced drinks in summer
  • You're looking for a discreet machine in the morning

Consider alternatives if:

  • You alternate between two coffee beans → the De'Longhi Rivelia (Bean Switch)
  • Your budget is tight → the Magnifica Evo (~€350) remains the value reference
  • You want metal finishes and a high-end touchscreen → the Rivelia or a Jura
  • You only drink black espresso → the Magnifica S Perfetto (~€280) is enough

Price and where to buy

The Philips 5500 LatteGo EP5547/90 can be found between €559 and €580 (prices checked in July 2026). Promotions regularly bring it lower: watch today's price.

💡 Tip: add an AquaClean filter at purchase if your water is hard. It's the filter behind the "5,000 cups without descaling" promise — and behind the machine's longevity.

Our Verdict

The Philips 5500 LatteGo is the bean-to-cup machine we recommend to families in 2026: 20 drinks including iced recipes, 4 profiles, a milk system that cleans in 15 seconds and noticeably quieter operation. No competitor under €600 packs in this much everyday comfort.

It doesn't have the Rivelia's spectacular screen or the charm of the Bean Switch, and its 0.26 L carafe means refilling for a crowd. But for the typical household that chains espressos in the morning and cappuccinos on weekends, it's the strongest equation in the segment.
