Best Coffee Beans 2026 — The Guide That Changes Your Daily Routine
Choosing your whole-bean coffee is the best value for money in home coffee: 0,11-0,15€ per cup against 0,35-0,55€ with capsules. But between roasts, origins and formats, how do you choose?
We tested 7 coffees (beans and capsules) over 4 weeks, in 3 machines (Philips 2200, De'Longhi Magnifica Evo, Jura E8) and with manual extraction. Here are our recommendations by use.

The Whole-Beans We Tested
Lavazza Barista Perfetto (1 kg) — 9/10 — the best for automatic machines
The Barista Perfetto is specially roasted for pressure extraction: it's the coffee that reveals automatic bean machines best. In 4 weeks of testing in a Philips 2200, it produced espressos that were full-bodied, with dense and stable crema, and above all exemplary consistency from one cup to the next.
- Intensity: 9/10 (medium-dark Italian roast)
- In the cup: rich body, cocoa and hazelnut notes, long finish
- The perfect choice for: De'Longhi Magnifica, Philips 2200, Krups, Jura
- Price: 15-20€/kg — count on 0,11€ per cup
Lavazza Qualità Oro (1 kg) — 8,5/10 — the best value for money
The Qualità Oro is Lavazza's historic coffee: a 100 % arabica blend, softer and more aromatic than the Barista Perfetto. Ideal for long coffee and filter coffee, it's a little light on straight espresso.
- Intensity: 5/10 — soft, velvety
- In the cup: floral and dried fruit notes, low bitterness
- The perfect choice for: filter coffee maker, long coffee in a bean machine, moka
- Price: 9-12€/kg — the gentlest price in the test
illy Classico (250 g) — 9/10 — the espresso benchmark
The illy Classico is the most consistent coffee on the market: a 100 % arabica blend that has been stable for decades. In a moka or a bean machine set fine, it produces an intense, balanced, never bitter espresso. Its price per kilo (32-40€) is high, but the freshness of the pressurized tins is exemplary.
- Intensity: 8/10
- In the cup: perfect balance, chocolate and caramel notes
- The perfect choice for: Bialetti moka, espresso in an automatic machine, guests
- Price: 8-10€ per 250 g — count on 0,15€ per cup
The Capsules We Tested
Nespresso Master Origin Ethiopia (10 capsules) — 9/10 — the most aromatic
The Master Origin range is Nespresso's aromatic laboratory. The Ethiopia, light roast, offers an exceptionally floral and fruity espresso — a revelation if you've never tried a light roast.
- Intensity: 4/10 (light)
- In the cup: jasmine, orange and honey notes
- Ideal for: discovering origin coffees in capsules
- Price: 7-9€ per 10 capsules
Nespresso Ispirazione Roma (10 capsules) — 8,4/10 — the balanced short espresso
The Ispirazione Roma is the most balanced coffee in the Nespresso Original range: medium roast, perfect for a short espresso (25-40 ml) with generous crema. It's our choice for Nespresso Original machines (Pixie, Essenza Mini, Inissia).
- Intensity: 8/10
- In the cup: cereal and wood notes, controlled bitterness
- Price: 6-8€ per 10 capsules
Organic compatible capsules (10 capsules) — 7,9/10 — the eco-friendly low budget
Organic compatible capsules (4-6€ per 10) work on all Nespresso Original machines. The taste is a notch below the official ones but very decent for the price, and the paper packaging is significantly more eco-friendly.
- Intensity: 7/10 (depending on the brand)
- In the cup: honest, slightly less crema than the official ones
- Savings: ~40 % less than official capsules, i.e. ~70€/year for 4 coffees a day
- Our advice: try 2-3 brands before stocking up — the taste differences are real
How to Choose According to Your Machine
| Your machine | Recommended coffee | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bean machine (Philips, De'Longhi, Krups, Jura) | Lavazza Barista Perfetto | Roast designed for pressure extraction |
| Bialetti moka | illy Classico | The historic Italian coffee, perfect in a moka |
| Filter coffee maker | Lavazza Qualità Oro | Soft and aromatic, ideal for long coffee |
| Nespresso Original | Ispirazione Roma + organic compatibles | The official/economic duo |
| Nespresso Vertuo | Official Vertuo capsules | No reliable compatible alternatives |
Bean machine tip: adjust your grind to the roast. A very dark coffee extracts better with a slightly coarser grind than average — test two settings on each side of your current one.
Do You Need a Grinder? Bean Machines Have One Built In
If you don't have a bean machine, a separate grinder transforms any coffee: we tested the Baratza Encore (electric, 139€), the Eureka Mignon Specialita (espresso, 350€), the Wilfa Uniform (149-179€) and the Hario Mini Mill (29-39€). See our grinder comparison and our dedicated reviews:

Our Verdict
For 90 % of households, the answer is simple:
- Bean machine → Lavazza Barista Perfetto 1 kg (15-20€): the best Italian coffee at the best price
- Nespresso Original → Ispirazione Roma official + organic capsules in rotation: quality at a controlled price
- Low budget → Lavazza Qualità Oro (9-12€): unbeatable for long coffee
Whole-bean coffee saves you 150-250€/year compared with capsules — and the taste has nothing to do with it. All the machines we tested (from 249€) make much better coffee than 95 % of capsule machines, whatever the price.
