Nespresso Vertuo Next Review — Our 2026 Verdict
Overall rating: 8.3/10 — The family-friendly compromise of the Vertuo range
The Vertuo Next is the big brother of the Vertuo Pop: same Centrifusion system, same coffee, but a 1.1 L water tank, Bluetooth/WiFi connectivity and formats up to the 535 ml carafe. We tested it for 4 weeks in family use (4 people, 6-8 coffees a day) to check whether it delivers on its promises.

Testing Methodology
- Duration: 4 weeks of daily use (family of 4, 6-8 coffees/day)
- Capsules tested: 9 Vertuo varieties (espresso, gran lungo, mug, carafe)
- Comparison: Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Plus and Nespresso Original (Pixie)
- Measurements: in-cup temperature, brewing time, noise (decibel meter), standby consumption
Coffee Quality
The Centrifusion system (7,000 rpm) produces the same thick crema as the Vertuo Pop — the coffee is identical between the two machines. Our tasting notes:
| Format | Volume | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Espresso (40 ml) | Small cup | 8/10 | Bold, thick crema |
| Double Espresso (80 ml) | Standard cup | 8.5/10 | The best balance |
| Gran Lungo (150 ml) | Large cup | 7.5/10 | Good, less body |
| Mug (230 ml) | Standard mug | 7/10 | Fine for the morning |
| Carafe (535 ml) | Carafe | 6.5/10 | Convenient, more diluted coffee — best for iced coffee or guests |
The machine reads each capsule's barcode and automatically adjusts volume, speed and temperature. The major difference versus the Pop: WiFi updates that adjust extraction profiles — a real plus if Nespresso improves an existing format.
Daily Use
The 1.1 L water tank changes everything. For 6-8 coffees a day, we refilled it 2 times a day versus 4-5 times with the Vertuo Pop. That's the real reason to buy the Next.
- Heat-up: 30 seconds, timed with a stopwatch
- Noise: 55 dB measured — quieter than pump machines
- Standby: 1 W, auto-off after 9 minutes
- Connectivity: the Nespresso app works well for updates; adding recipes via Bluetooth is a gimmick but pleasant
Watch out: several user reports mention failures (leaks, unread barcode) on the first Next batches. Nespresso fixed them in recent batches, but check the warranty (2 years) and buy from a channel with easy returns (Amazon).
Cost of Ownership
| Item | Unit cost | Frequency | Cost/year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertuo capsules (average) | €0.45 | 4/day | €657 |
| Nespresso descaling kit | €9.90 | 3x/year | €30 |
| Annual total | — | — | ~€687 |
| System | Machine cost | Annual cost (4/day) |
|---|---|---|
| Vertuo Next | €99-129 | ~€687 |
| Nespresso Original + compatibles | €109 | ~€430 |
| Bean-to-cup (Philips 2200) | €278 | ~€167 |
Over 3 years, the Vertuo Next costs about €1,300 more than a bean-to-cup machine. It's the same 17-month break-even point between capsules and beans — our full study details the math.
What We Like Less
- Proprietary capsules: no discounted Vertuo-compatible capsules, unlike the Original system.
- High annual cost: ~€687/year for 4 coffees a day.
- First-batch reliability: a documented history of failures — go for recent batches and a solid warranty.
- No milk frother: add +€50 for an Aeroccino.
Vertuo Next vs Alternatives
| Criterion | Vertuo Next (€99-129) | Vertuo Pop (€59) | Original Pixie (€109) |

| Water tank | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (1.1 L) | ⭐⭐ (0.56 L) | ⭐⭐⭐ |

Choose the Next if: you're a family, you like large formats (mug, carafe) and connectivity appeals to you.
Choose the Pop if: you live alone and your budget is tight — the coffee is identical.
Choose the Original system if: short espresso is your priority and you want compatible capsules at ~€0.22.
Our Verdict
The Vertuo Next is the best Vertuo machine for a family or an indulgent couple: the 1.1 L tank, connectivity and formats up to the carafe make it a complete machine. The coffee stays at Vertuo range level — very good on espresso, excellent on crema.
Its problem isn't the machine but the system: at €0.45 per capsule with no compatible alternative, the annual budget is twice that of a bean-to-cup machine. If the convenience of capsules is your priority, go for it. If you're ready to maintain a bean-to-cup machine, the Philips 2200 (€278) pays for itself in 17 months.
Rating: 8.3/10

The Vertuo Next fixes the Vertuo Pop's main flaw: a 1.1 L water tank suited to families. The coffee remains excellent, but the cost of Vertuo capsules and the lack of compatible options weigh heavily on the annual budget. A good machine for families on the Vertuo system.
