Coffee Quality

For its price, the coffee is surprisingly consistent: stable extraction, decent temperature (60-63°C), honest crema. Intensity stays behind the De'Longhi Magnifica Evo (+€80), but for daily use without barista demands, it's more than enough.

Espresso (40 ml)7.5/10Decent, honest crema
Long coffee (200 ml)8/10Pleasant, balanced
2 cups8/10Convenient, double the time
Consistency8.5/10Very constant

The Trade-off: Noise and Maintenance

The grinder is noisy (72 dB measured — the loudest in our tests): plan to run it before the kids wake up. Maintenance requires some diligence: the brew group disassembles for a weekly rinse, and descaling is manual (no full automatic program).

These are the two points where the Philips 2200 (+€30) does better: a simple removable brew group and screen-guided maintenance.

Our Verdict

The Krups EA8105 is the best price/performance entry into the world of whole beans: €249 for a real grinder, consistent coffee and a cost per cup of €0.28. Accept the grinder noise and the slightly more manual maintenance, and you save €350/year versus capsules.

For €30 more, the Philips 2200 is more pleasant to live with daily. The Magnifica Evo (+€80) serves clearly more intense coffee. But if budget is the only constraint, the Krups does the job.
