Nescafé Dolce Gusto Neo Review — Our 2026 Verdict
Overall rating: 7.8/10 — The capsule machine trying to save the planet
The Dolce Gusto Neo is Nescafé's new generation: compostable paper capsules, a more compact, faster machine. We tested it for 3 weeks (60+ drinks) to see whether ecology comes at the expense of the coffee.

Testing Methodology
- Duration: 3 weeks, 60+ drinks (2 people)
- Capsules tested: 8 Neo varieties (espresso, latte, chai, iced coffee)
- Comparison: classic Dolce Gusto Genio, Nespresso Original (Pixie)
- Measurements: in-cup temperature, brewing time, noise, real-world capsule composting
Coffee Quality
The Neo's coffee is decent without being memorable. The high-pressure system produces an honest crema on espresso, but intensity stays below Nespresso Original. The machine is however excellent on milky drinks and teas — its real playground.
| Drink | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso (40 ml) | 7/10 | Decent, average crema, lacks body |
| Latte macchiato | 8.5/10 | Very good — well-balanced milk and coffee |
| Cappuccino | 8/10 | Good, decent foam |
| Chai latte | 8/10 | Surprising — very well done |
| Iced coffee | 8.5/10 | The summer asset, fresh and balanced |
The Eco Advantage
Neo capsules are made of certified compostable paper (they compost under industrial conditions). Over a year at 4 drinks a day, that's about 1,460 capsules that don't end up in a landfill — versus aluminum/plastic capsules for other systems. That's the real buying argument.
Our composting test: after 12 weeks in a garden compost, the capsule was ~80% decomposed. The glue is the only part that holds up. Honorable mention.
What We Like Less
- Coffee in the background: the espresso doesn't reach Nespresso Original level.
- Limited catalog: the Neo range is still young — fewer varieties than classic Dolce Gusto or Nespresso.
- No compatibility: old Dolce Gusto capsules don't work on the Neo.
- Capsule cost: ~€0.40-0.50 per milky drink, comparable to the Vertuo system.
Our Verdict
The Dolce Gusto Neo is the most eco-friendly capsule machine on the market, and that's its main argument. If you mostly drink lattes, teas and cold drinks, it's pleasant, fast and well finished for €69-89. If pure espresso is your priority, stick with Nespresso Original.
